The NCAA Infractions Committee has passed down its ruling regarding LSU Assistant Coach D.J. McCarthy and recruit Akiem Hicks. The committee smacked LSU with a 1 year probation period and the school self-imposed a loss of 2 scholarships. But LSU was commended for self reporting the violations as soon as their compliance office learned of them.
LSU Assistant Coach McCarthy is found to have provided transportation and housing to a recruit, Hicks, while he was on an unofficial visit to the school and also using a second phone, which was not disclosed to investigators, to make impermissible phone calls to recruits.
The NCAA said that LSU avoided more severe penalties because they self reported these compliance issues and cooperated with the NCAA investigation. Assistant Coach McCarthy resigned shortly after and Akiem Hicks never played at LSU.
